LIVE FROM LANDMARK WITH METTE RASMUSSEN, KUSUM NORMOYLE & STINE JANVIN MOTLAND

September 30, 2016 in LIVEFROMLANDMARK

In our third episode in this series, we feature artists Stine Janvin Motland, Kusum Normoyle and Mette Rasmussen in a live recording from Bergen Kunsthall. Combining a panel discussion and live performances, this episode explores how the artists find and continue to search for their sound, the use of the body to create these sounds, the materiality of sound, and the nature of collaboration.

The episode is presented in the playlist below where you will also find full recordings of the evening’s performances—Stine Janvin Motland’s presentation of  Fake Synthetic Music, an exercise imitating an electronic instrument, and Kusum Normoyle and Mette Rasmussen’s premiere improvisational performance, a culmination showcasing their two week journey through the Norwegian landscape.

For more information see Bergen Kunsthall. For more about each artist, please visit wwww.kusumnormoyle.net www.stinesthetics.com and www.cafeoto.co.uk/artists/mette-rasmussen

MOVING SOUNDS WITH TORI WRÅNES

October 08, 2015 in TORIWRÅNES

Following Tori Wrånes worldwide from 2013-2015, here is a small collection of bits and pieces of conversation and sound recordings.

In this episode, Tori shares with us everything from rough vocal sketches, to performance documentation, as well as an in-depth explanation of recent performances at Transart in Bonzano Italy last September as well as her solo show at Project Space 1646 in the Hague, in the Netherlands. Passionate about idea of moving sound and creating architecture and sculpture with sound, Tori explains the importance these tools in her practice and why we want to look upwards and outwards.

Since first meeting Tori during her performance of YES NIX, Tori has continued to open my ears to the different ways in which you can perceive, make and think about sound. In making her performances, she transports people into fantasy worlds employing intricate costumes, made up language, her incredibly trained and dynamic voice, as well as other theatrical devices. PLAYING IN NATURE WITH THORA DOLVEN BALKE

September 30, 2015 in THORADOLVENBALKE

Venturing in the summer of 2015 to Kvalnes on the north tip of Norway to visit Thora Dolven Balke in her mother’s studio, this interview talks to her unique approach to art making. Dancing between film, photographic images and sound, Thora seems to experience the world with her eyes wide open–constantly capturing the narratives immediately around her.

In this episode Thora shares her current investigations into radio plays as well as experiments with field recordings of the natural reverb of Kvalnes mountain tops and thrown rocks. She discusses the surreal contrast of city life with the silence of the Arctic. Some of these explorations into sound are covered here in an interview staged in early September 2015, with recordings and sketches further developed for an exhibition curated by Thora at the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival in Xiamen in November 2015.

This summer I ventured to Kvalnes in the north of Norway to visit Thora in her mother’s studio to talk about her unique approach to art making. Dancing between film, photographic images and sound, Thora seems to experience the world with her eyes wide open–constantly capturing the narratives immediately around her. Helping shape the direction of the series, we decided that there sound be more focus on experimentation rather than creating without an end goal. Thora shared her current investigations into radio plays, hiked mountain tops to record rocks and natural reverb, and discussed the surreal contrast of city life with the silence of the Arctic.
